 A rugged and mythic Scotland is the setting for Disney’s animated action-adventure movie “Brave.” The impetuous, tangle-haired Merida, though a daughter of royalty, would prefer to make her mark as a great archer. A clash of wills with her mother compels Merida to make a reckless choice, which unleashes unintended peril on her father’s kingdom and her mother?s life. Merida struggles with the unpredictable forces of nature, magic and a dark, ancient curse to set things right.

I took my 8 year old to this movie when it first came to theaters and we loved it! Brave is filled with lots of action, great colors, and a storyline that keeps you interested throughout the entire movie!

Though the very beginning could be a little scary for younger viewers (a large bear comes to Merida’s land and attacks her father – it alludes that her father dies, but you find out soon after that he is alive and lost his leg in the bear attack), I’d say that any child over the age of 5 would enjoy Brave. Younger viewers may need a warning about the opening scene, but I think they would enjoy it as well as long as they were warned. There’s one more scene in the movie where the warriors hunt a bear and try to kill it – it’s a little tense for younger viewers, in my opinion. I think that these scenes were heightened by the theater experience, and that the home movie experience may reduce some of the scariness for kids.
